12/16/2009 These Austrian Shades with beaded trim were installed in house in Islip that is over a hundred years old. The customer wanted to achieve an elegant "vintage" look. Austrian shades are as fancy as it gets. We added a Shirr-tape with a diamond pattern at the top for a substantial and sympathetic heading to top off these Austrians. For the doors, the customer chose hourglass door panels with matching beaded trim on the cinch tiebacks.

12/23/09 These are the sliding panels also known as Panel Track. This picture shows the Horizons "Elance" product I installed this week in a Melville family room. The customer was very pleased with the color harmony created in the rome and the serene mood created in this comfortable famiily room. By the way this product was configured with a split draw to open from the center with a child safe cord loop control on the right side.

I just installed four large windows of Hunter Douglas NewStyle shutters. The customers were thrilled! See the pictures of the job here! These are 3-1/2" louvers installed inside the windows to show the beautiful moldings the customers had already installed. We used 2 divider rails so the shutters can be adjusted in 3 sections for privacy and light control

Last week I made a trip to Colorado to take the Hunter Douglas Master Installer training course at their facility in Broomfield. Along with 15 other students, I stripped several of the more complicated shade products down to the components and reassembled them to proper working condition, installed them in windows and adjusted them properly. Since I was a child I always enjoyed (and sometimes got in trouble for) taking things apart and putting them back together again. In this training I learned a lot about Hunter's more complicated products and now I feel way more confident about opening them up and doing repairs and adjustments. For example, in one exercise, we took a Duette Ultraglide (the pump) and broke it down, converted it to Literise (cordless) and then back to Ultraglide again.
The staff at Hunter Douglas was extremely helpful in our classes. We even got to meet some of the executives from different divisions and got a peek at some of the projects they are working on for the near future. Hunter Douglas is very environmentally concious and they showed us some concepts for packaging that will reduce waste and make it easier to recycle packaging. By the way, all of Hunter Douglas' products meet the "Eco-Green" standard and do not emit harmful pollutants into the air in the homes they are installed in.
One of the most interesting speakers was the VP in charge of quality control. He told us about all the things Hunter is doing in the various areas of quality. It is a much more conplicated and thorough science than I had imagined.
Luckily, I have a cousin who lives nearby in Boulder and one night she picked me up and we had dinner together with her husband and daughter in an excellent local Southwest style restaurant. Two nights later, she invited me over to her home and prepared a delicious dinner. We had many interesting discussions "catching up on family" etc. I had such a nice time I’m sorry that we don’t see each other more. Thank you Gina.
Right near the La Quinta Inn some of us stayed at, there is an excellent Mexican restaurant called Old Santa Fe. I had dinner with five of the other attendees and the food and conversation, and jokes were great.
